How to Care for Your Italian Linen

Linen That Gets Better With Every Wash

One of the most beautiful things about Italian linen is that it improves with age. Unlike synthetic fabrics that pill, fade, or lose their shape, linen becomes softer, more supple, and more beautiful every time you wash it. Caring for your MARIELĒ pieces is simple — and the more you wear and wash them, the better they get.

Washing Your Linen

Machine washing is perfectly fine for your MARIELĒ linen. Use a gentle or delicate cycle with cold or lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F maximum). A mild, pH-neutral detergent is ideal — avoid anything with bleach or harsh optical brighteners, which can weaken linen fibers over time.

Turn your garment inside out before washing to protect the outer surface and preserve the color. Wash with similar colors, and avoid overloading the machine — linen needs room to move freely in the drum.

Drying

Air drying is always our first recommendation. Lay your linen flat or hang it to dry away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time. Linen dries relatively quickly thanks to its natural breathability.

If you prefer to use a dryer, use a low heat setting and remove the garment while it's still slightly damp — this makes ironing much easier and prevents over-drying, which can make linen feel stiff.

Ironing

But if you prefer a smoother look, iron your linen while it's still slightly damp using a medium-to-high heat setting. You can also use a light mist of water or a steam iron. Always iron on the reverse side to protect the fabric's surface.

Storage

Store your linen garments folded or hung in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid storing linen in plastic bags or airtight containers — linen is a natural fiber that needs to breathe. If storing for a longer period, wrap in breathable cotton or muslin.

The Bottom Line
